REDUCING WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

There is no way to totally eliminate violence in the workplace. However, education is key, by carefully screening employment applicants, and being aware of indications manifested by employees, it is possible to prevent, most instances of violence. Below are "Red Flags" - profiles of high-risk individuals:

White male in his 30s and 40s

Loner, socially isolated and does not have a support system

Owns guns and displays a fascination for and proficiency in weapons

Long history of frustration and failure

Demonstrates emotional or mental instability

Works in a high pressure setting

Insubordinate, defiant, or blatantly violates procedures

Has made threats against the company or an individual

Suffering from an alcohol or drug abuse problem

Hatred for women

Has experienced some precipitating event
 


FACTORS THAT INCREASE THE RISK FOR VIOLENCE


Below are factors that increase the risk of homicide or other acts of violence in the workplace:

NOT having a management supported violence policy. To reduce the risk of workplace violence employers should have a non-tolerance violence written policy.

Allowing employees to bring weapons of any kind into the workplace.

Exchange of money in public

Working alone or in small numbers

Working late night or early morning hours

Working in high crime areas

Guarding valuable property or possessions

Working in community settings, i.e. taxicab drivers, police
