SAFETY RULES FOR THE USE OF PAINTS AND SOLVENTS
1. Make sure you can change gloves as often as
is necessary. Don't handle wet gloves or get paint or solvents on the insides.
These materials inside a glove can remain wet and prolong contact with
the skin.
2. Label self-closing metal containers to collect
used gloves, aprons and other protective clothing.
3. Areas where paints are used must be ventilated
properly. Follow the instructions on the appropriate material safety data
sheet that concern the paint storage, use, transportation and cleanup.
4. If a fellow worker splashes paint or solvent
on himself or herself, instruct the person to wash with a neutral soap
that won't irritate and dry the skin more.
5. If paint splashes in a worker's eyes rush the
person to a sink or emergency eyewash. Rinse thoroughly with eyes. Rinse
thoroughly with eyes wide open for 15 to 20 minutes to make sure all the
paint or solvent has been washed away.
6. Under no circumstances should a worker pour
used paint or solvents into sinks or down floor drains.
7. Smoking is not allowed in an area where workers
use paints or solvents.
8. Use only as much paint or solvent that is required
during one work shift.
9. All unused material must be stored in proper
containers in a designated area or storage room.
10. Do not handle paint or solvent soaked rags
with your bare hands. If paint or solvent is splashed on your shirt or
pants, make sure you wash and change your clothes.
11. Do not assume that barrier creams will protect
your hands and face from accidental splashes.
12. Keep partial cans of paint sealed when not
in use.
13. Be sure to wear respirators and face shields as well as other protective clothing when using paints or solvents.
